Greetings From A Rainy Day in Florence
Yesterday, while unpacking a box, I stumbled upon this old photograph of Florence's lesser-known Ponte Santa Trenity Bridge. Holding the framed picture brought back a flood of memories of that day, from the smell of wet stone permeating the air and raindrops falling against my face. It is amazing how a photograph can bring back such intense sensory experiences.
Florence always reminds me of entertaining misadventures— like my several attempts to see Michelangelo's David and the inside of the Duomo Cathedral. On the day this photo was taken, Liam and I had planned to visit the Boboli Gardens, but a sudden downpour, known locally in Italian as a 'nubifragio' interrupted our plans.
We parked along the south side of the river. Undeterred by the rain, we popped up our umbrellas and wandered toward Point Vecchio. The heavily darkened clouds added a poetic and romantic layer to the atmosphere, making the stroll delightful despite our soaked feet. In any regard, there is always a particular sweetness in taking a walk in the rain.
As we approached Ponte Vecchio, the rain subsided, and the bridge was illuminated by the sunlight breaking through the clouds. We paused mid-bridge to admire the swift river below. Looking upriver, we saw the majestic Ponte Santa Trinta Bridge standing gracefully across the Arno River. The diffused light of the cloudy sky created the perfect lighting for a photo. Almost instinctively, I raised my camera to snap the image, unexpectedly capturing this beautiful image.
I am beginning to appreciate our Florence mishaps.
Enjoy!
